Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Crown Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
A Copperfield chimney crown replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $450 to $1,200 installed, depending on the crown size, the condition of what’s underneath, and whether we are mixing a custom mortar wash or installing a pre-cast Copperfield-compatible crown. We keep Copperfield crown repair materials on the truck for most standard residential flue sizes, so we can usually get this done the same day we diagnose it. Most Los Angeles homeowners find out their crown has failed the same way: a damp smell near the fireplace, a water stain on the ceiling below the chimney, or efflorescence, that white chalky powder that shows up on the brick below the crown line.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield manufactures a wide run of chimney caps, crowns, and termination assemblies, but the crown repair we do most often applies to the standard masonry chimney terminations Copperfield sells through chimney supply houses across the Los Angeles basin. That includes their single-flue and multi-flue crown forms, their stainless and galvanized cap base plates, and the cast-in-place crown systems paired with Copperfield’s round and oval flue tiles.
Here is the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Copperfield crowns are sized to the flue tile outside dimension, not the chimney top opening. If you measure the inside of your flue and order based on that number, the crown will not seat. You need the outside dimension of the flue tile, plus the width of the chimney chase across all four sides. We measure all of it when we show up, so the crown that goes on is the crown that fits.
OEM versus aftermarket: for most Copperfield-compatible crown work, what actually matters is the material spec. A proper Portland-based mortar crown with a flexible polymer additive will outlast a cheap bagged mortar mix in Los Angeles sun by a factor of three to one. We use commercial-grade crown mixes whether the form itself is Copperfield-branded or a trade equivalent that matches the same dimensions.
Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks running across the crown surface. Los Angeles temperature swings between day and night can open and close these cracks seasonally. Water gets in, then sits. Over a few years the cracks widen and the freeze-thaw cycle, mild as it is here, spalls off chunks of the crown edge.
- Spalling or missing pieces along the crown edge. Once the outer edge starts breaking away, the crown loses its overhang and water runs straight down the brick face instead of dripping away from the chimney. You will see brick faces flaking off within a season or two.
- White mineral deposits on the brick just below the crown. That is dissolved salt and calcium from the mortar migrating to the surface. It means water has been moving through the crown or the top course of brick for a while, not just one storm.
- Water stains inside the attic or on the ceiling near the chimney chase. A failed crown lets rainfall and sprinkler overspray run down the flue chase. By the time you see the stain inside, the crown has usually been compromised for months.
- The flue cap assembly wobbles or sits off center. When the crown under the Copperfield cap base has eroded, the cap loses its anchor points. Strong Santa Ana winds will rock it loose and can eventually take the cap clean off the chimney.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a Copperfield crown repair or replacement generally falls between $450 and $1,200 with us. The range comes down to chimney size, roof access, and whether we are resurfacing the existing crown form or tearing out the old one and rebuilding it from below.
Every crown repair we quote includes the full scope, in writing, before any work begins. That means demolition of the failed crown material, cleaning and keying the top course of brick so the new crown bonds properly, forming the new crown with the correct drip edge and slope, and installing or re-setting the Copperfield cap assembly once the mortar cures. We use professional-grade crown materials from the trade supply lines, including Copperfield-compatible components and sister brands like Olympia Chimney and Famco where the spec calls for them.
The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies here. Every crown repair we do in Los Angeles is covered by a written one-year guarantee. If the repair fails within that year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No fine print, no argument. That guarantee is on the invoice, not just in the sales pitch.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely inspect the situation from the roof or a ladder if you are comfortable with heights near a chimney. Look for cracks wider than a nickel, missing crown edge, or white streaking on the brick below the crown. If that is all you want to know, you can see it with your own eyes in ten minutes. Hank Delano grew up in Eagle Rock and has spent his working life inspecting chimneys across Los Angeles, and he will tell you plainly: Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it means.
Where DIY goes wrong is the repair itself. Crown material has to slope away from the flue at a minimum pitch, overhang the brick by an inch to two inches, and include an expansion joint around each flue tile. Get any of those three wrong and you have bought yourself a two-year crown, not a fifteen-year crown. Working on a roof around a chimney also means fall risk and the potential to damage roofing material while you work. This is one repair where the ladder is the easy part. The crown geometry is what separates a fix from a repeat failure. If you want a number for the work, call (830) 251-4560 and we will give you the straight price the first time.
FAQs
A properly built crown with the right mix and adequate slope should last 15 to 25 years in the Los Angeles climate, with shorter lifespans for chimneys in full sun with no cap protection from sprinkler overspray.
Yes, when the cracks are hairline and the crown base is still sound. Once the edges are spalled or the crown has lost its slope, patching becomes temporary at best. We will show you which situation you have and price the repair accordingly. Call (830) 251-4560 and we’ll schedule a look.
Most single-flue crown replacements take three to four hours on site, including tear-out, forming, and re-setting the cap assembly. The mortar needs time to cure, but the cap is set and the roof cleaned up the same day.
Yes. We keep Copperfield-compatible crown forms and cap base plates for standard flue sizes on hand, along with crown mortar and bonding agents. We also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco materials where the repair calls for them. If your chimney needs a custom form, we measure on site and build it the same visit.
