Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Los Angeles typically costs $290 to $460 installed, depending on flue size, roof access, and whether existing masonry work is needed before mounting. We stock Gelco-compatible caps in the most common Los Angeles flue dimensions on our trucks, and most installs take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on the roof. Most owners discover the failure after a rainstorm, when water shows up in the firebox or you hear birds moving around inside the flue. Sometimes the first clue is a rusted cap sitting visibly crooked from the ground.

We’re an independent chimney service company, not a Gelco dealer or affiliate, but Gelco caps are a brand we specify regularly because they hold up well in Southern California’s sun-and-smog exposure. Flint Chimney Sweep is part of the Garrison Partners family founded in 2002, and we also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield products when the job calls for them.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes their chimney caps in a range of standard outer dimensions, and the most common ones we install in Los Angeles are the 8×8, 9×13, and 13×13 sizes. The critical measurement is the outside dimension of your flue tile, not the inside opening. A lot of homeowners measure the hole and order a cap that’s an inch too small, then water sneaks in around the skirt. A proper Gelco cap sits down over the flue tile with a skirt that extends at least an inch past each side.

Identifying your current model is easiest if you still have the box or receipt, but if not, look for a small sticker or stamped text on the underside of the lid. Most Gelco units use a stainless or galvanized mesh band and a standard bolt-on mounting bracket. If it’s a Gelco multi-flue cap, the footprint matters more than the hole size, and we measure on-site before ordering or installing. OEM Gelco replacement components are solid, but we’ll tell you honestly when a quality aftermarket stainless cap does the same job for less money. On the coast, we lean hard toward full stainless. Inland Los Angeles, windswept galvanized is usually fine.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after rain. This almost always means the cap’s skirt, sealant, or base flashing has opened up. In Los Angeles, our rain comes in short hard bursts against sun-dried flashing, which is exactly when a failing cap shows itself.
  • Rust streaks running down the flue tile or chase top. Galvanized caps near the coast will corrode in five to seven years, and salt air makes it four to five. Once the metal’s streaking, the cap is well past its useful life.
  • Bird noise or nesting material in the flue. A missing or torn mesh screen is the usual cause. Gelco mesh is tight and durable, but embers and weather eventually work holes in it. Sparrows and starlings don’t need much of an opening.
  • A cap that’s visibly tilted or missing a leg. Santa Ana winds routinely hit 50 to 60 mph in foothill neighborhoods like Eagle Rock and Pasadena. A bracket that’s held fine for a decade will finally loosen, and a leaning cap lets rain go straight into the flue.
  • Smoke drafting back into the room on windy days. This isn’t always the cap, but a cap that’s shifted can obstruct the outlet or change the draft enough to cause blowback. We check the cap, flue, and smoke chamber together.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a single-flue Gelco cap replacement runs $290 to $410 installed. A custom or multi-flue cap lands between $380 and $460, and any masonry repair around the flue tile runs additional. The number you’re quoted is the number you’ll pay. We write the price before any work starts, no exceptions.

Every Gelco cap installation includes the new cap, mounting hardware, weatherproofing around the base, and a function check. All repair work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee valid for one full year. If a covered repair fails in that window, we return and fix it at no charge. We don’t charge a trip fee for warranty work, and we don’t argue about the terms.

The main cost drivers are roof pitch and flue tile condition. A cracked tile won’t hold mounting screws well, so sometimes a repair is required before the cap goes on. We’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing before we touch anything.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check from the ground whether your cap is missing, leaning, or visibly rusted. A pair of binoculars does the job. What we don’t recommend is ladder work on any roof with more than a 6/12 pitch, especially an older L.A. composition roof that’s slick with morning dew. The screws holding Gelco caps in place sit under tension when wind moves the cap, and when one releases, the bracket can snap sideways and take a chunk of flue tile with it. Flue tile edges are sharp, and a fall from a two-story roof is a life-changer.

If you’re comfortable on a flat or low-slope roof and want to measure your flue tile so you know what we’re looking at, call us at (830) 251-4560 and we’ll walk you through it on the phone. Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it means. If you’d rather not go up at all, that’s why we exist.
